You will be surprised to find that getting rid of your Skype account involves considerably more than just logging in and clicking a button somewhere. Ultimately, it is not possible to completely delete a Skype account. You can, however, effectively deactivate an account in such a way that it won't appear in the Skype directory, nor be connected to you via search queries.
Remove Personal Information
Skype recommends removing all personal information from your account as a first measure to deactivating it. Log in to your account on the Skype website (see Resources for a link) and delete all of your personal information, like your name, phone number and location from your profile. This will prevent anyone from being able to use this information to find your Skype account. In addition, add an email address that isn't publicly associated with you and set it as the primary email address for the account. Then, delete the original email address, so that no one will be able to find your account by searching for your email address.
Removal From Skype Directory
The most thorough deactivation Skype offers is to have your account removed from the Skype directory, so that even if someone knows the name of the account they won't be able to find it. You must contact Skype's customer service to achieve this, and it can take up to two weeks. See the link in the Resources section to get started. Unfortunately, even this process won't remove your Skype name from the contact lists of your friends, but they won't be able to call you any more.
