I've recently changed from an iphone 4 to an iphone 5. On my old phone, when I deleted an email it remained on my hotmail account on the main computer and my ipad. This meant I could just keep a few current emails on the phone, and use my computer/ipad for longer emails etc. Now with the iphone 5, it seems to be controlling all my emails - if I delete an email, it is deleted from the servers. When I first set up the hotmail on the iphone 5 I deleted and lost a load of folders which I could never get back!
I have spoken to apple and the vodafone shop and they all say that my phone settings look fine. Can anybody please suggest why my phone is controlling all my emails. I would really like it to be like it was on the iphone 4.
- Connecting to Outlook.com with apps and devices
This behavior is caused due to IMAP settings in your new phone.
MAP and POP are two different protocols. There are many differences between these two. The main difference is that IMAP (Internet Messaged Access Protocol) always syncs with mail server so that any changes you make in your mail client (Outlook.com) will instantly appear on your webmail inbox.
On the other hand, in POP (Post Office Protocol), your mail client account and mail server are not synced. It means whatever changes you make to your email account in the mail client will not be transferred to the webmail inbox (your old phone).
In simple terms, if you are using IMAP and mark a mail as read, it gets marked as read in your web based inbox too (because the changes are happening on the server). However, this won’t be the case if you are using POP, because the mails are downloaded to your PC and the changes won’t reflect on the server.
